READ Jan. 13 Your Bible Study is Ready! Psalm 2:1-12
This Psalm sounds like a description of the world today. Rulers and nations revolting against God. And seeking their own way through some very difficult days. Here’s a quick outline for you to follow. And a devotional for your encouragement.
Rulers Revolt (Psalm 2:1-3)
1 Why do the [a]nations [b]rage,
And the people plot a [c]vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the Lord and against His Anointed,[d] saying,
3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.”
God’s Response (Psalm 2:4-6)
4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision.
5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure:
6 “Yet I have [e]set My King f]On My holy hill of Zion.”
God’s Decree (Psalm 2:7-9)
7 “I will declare the [g]decree: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.
8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
9 You shall [h]break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”
Our Response (Psalm 2:10-11)
10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear, And rejoice with trembling.
12 i]Kiss the Son, lest [j]He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

Psalm 2 is about kingships. The powerful nations of the world. But no king or kingdom can compare with God’s kingdom. It is quoted or alluded to many times in the New Testament. The most obvious reference is in Acts 4:25-26 and in Acts 13:33. Hebrews quotes Psalm 2 in Hebrews 1:5; 5:5 as does the apostle John in Revelation 2:27.
As God’s people we can read and sing Psalm 2 and be reminded of how God works in history. David and his descendants would be kings. They were given the task of carrying out God’s redemptive purposes in the world.
In the face of overwhelming opposition, this psalm exults in the promises made to the Davidic kings at his coronation.
With its prospect of a worldwide rule for the house of David, this psalm also looks to the future, when David’s ultimate heir, the Messiah, would indeed accomplish this.
With the coming of the Messiah, this psalm’s victorious portrait of the Davidic throne takes on even more significance and finds its ultimate meaning. It finds its fulfillment in the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ and His kingdom reign. Those who take refuge in Him have found the only truly safe refuge in this broken world. Those who persist in resisting God and His rule, even if they are powerful “rulers of the earth,” will be finally defied and justly destroyed.
Despite whatever trials rock our lives today, David’s greatest Son, Jesus Himself, is the King-Ruler of the universe. One day His kingship will break open in universal acknowledgement and the execution of perfect justice.
For now, we can go forth in the glad assurance that in Jesus we enjoy His kingship forever! Every injustice will be made right. Take heart. Those who know Him are on the right side!
